Black Gel Polish

Video: Gel polish review

Hi readers,

I don’t have a new mani this week but I do have a new video…A subscriber requested I give my thoughts on the different brands I’ve used. It is lengthy so feel free to fast forward through the bits you already know about. Hope you find it helpful. And remember, everyone’s nails are different so you may have different experience with a certain brand then I’ve had. All products purchased by me.

Hi Kim, your videos and blog are fantastic. I’m a gel polish DIYer as well, and have learnt so much from you, so thank you very much for all the time and effort you put into your blog. I personally am very appreciative. :)
I also wanted to ask your advice on a good purple gel polish (hope you don’t mind). I’m a mostly Gelish girl, but know what you mean about the hit & miss application, and their purples are colours I have issues with. I always end up with bald spots, which I hate. So I was wondering if you’d have a couple of purples you could recommend that apply and wear well. Many thanks :)

Thank you so much…I’m happy to hear you find them helpful.

Some nice purples that I like are TruGel Boysenberry, a dark purple cream, I have Gelish Night Reflection but I’ve had issues with shrink back. LeChat Queen’s Coronation is a nice medium purple frost, LeChat Night at the Cinema is a gorgeous dark glitter polish. LeChat Butterflies is a beautiful light purple/lilac cream. All of these wear nicely and apply great except the Gelish. And Butterflies faded ever so slightly after a week but it was still beautiful.

I’m sure I have more but those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Hope that helps!

You’re a star, thanks so much Kim, I’ll definitely have to try some of those. I had issues with Night Reflection as well, which is a shame as it’s such a gorgeous colour. Many thanks for those suggestions, I’ll definitely give them a try.

Hi Kim, just wondering if you’d mind sharing some tips on applying top coat please. I’ve used both Gelish and Kiss top coats and found both to be good, but sometimes I seem to “drag” some of the colour off when I apply my top coat. I usually do 2 coats of colour, sometimes 3, but I always make sure the colour’s opaque before applying top coat. It doesn’t always happen, but sometimes I find some of the colour’s shifted after the top coat. Not sure if I’m applying my top coat too thin, so it’s dragging? Or if my colour coats are too thin. If you wouldn’t mind sharing some tips, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you :)

      Hi Zoe,

Some colors, especially darker ones will have a little excess uncured color in the inhibition layer. This is normal with darker colors as the uv/led rays do not penetrate as easily as with lighter colors. This should not effect your wear but it will result in you seeing some color transferring to your top coat brush. I would suggest wiping the sticky layer off before applying the top coat. I do this all time because of all the nail art I do and I have never had any issues with the top coat peeling or chipping. Hope that helps.
